Behind the Lens

Landscape and nature photography drawn to the Blue Ridge and the wild country beyond it.

Portrait of photographer Mike Skultety with his Canon DSLR

I’m Mike Skultety, a photographer drawn to beautiful scenery, slow rivers, and early mornings when the light works in my favor.

Most of my work comes from the Blue Ridge Mountains and the high Appalachians. I’m drawn to foggy ridge-lines, waterfalls flowing past ancient rock, radiant sunrises, colorful sunsets, and valleys set on fire by autumn light. Honestly, I’ll follow good light just about anywhere — Yosemite, river valleys, the coast, the mountains, or quiet corners off the beaten path.

I tend to take my time when photographing nature. I’d rather come home with one shot I love than a memory card full of hundreds of “almosts.” These images took more patience than skill: hiking into remote places, standing around in the cold, waiting for fog to lift, trying to dodge bad weather, and hoping the light shows up at exactly the right moment.

These are the photographs I keep coming back to long after the strenuous hikes, exhausting drives, and frozen fingers fade away.

I hope one of these prints speaks to you. Buy one, or six. Your walls deserve better than mass-produced “art” décor anyway. Thanks for stopping by.
